Introduction to the department

Welcome to the home page of the Department of Radiology, The Jikei University School of Medicine. Here is a brief introduction to our department, and the services we provide. The department was established in 1932 and has been actively providing radiological services for over 70 years. Due to advances in the field of radiology, the department divided in 2001 to form the departments of Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Oncology.

Within the department of Diagnostic Radiology, image diagnosis and interventional radiology are performed. We use a number of modalities for diagnostic imaging, including CT, MRI, ultrasound and nuclear medicine; providing a safe, high quality imaging service for our patients. We currently perform a number of techniques in the field of interventional radiology. Chemoembolisation of malignant tumours is carried out, as is the embolisation of non-malignant tumours such as uterine leiomyoma.Percutaneous angioplasty and percutaneous needle biopsies are also performed with satisfying results.

In the department of Radiation Oncology, in collaboration with oncologists from other departments, we provide a multidisciplinary high quality service, aiming to offer our patients the best standards of care. In the treatment of head and neck, and urogenital tumours, in collaboration with otolaryngologists, dentists, urologists and gynaecologists we aim to provide the most effective treatment whilst preserving morphology and function. In order to achieve this we use a variety of therapies, including brachytherapy. We are also actively using radioisotope therapy in the treatment of thyroid disorders.
